Pope Benedict XVI called on Friday for halting the sending of weapons into Syria.

Pope Benedict said in a statement to journalists onboard the plane carrying him from Rome to Beirut that sending weapons to Syria must be stopped because the war will not be able to continue without these weapons being sent.
He called for sending views of peace and amity to Syria instead of sending weapons, which he described as a big sin.
Pope Benedict XVI started on Friday a three-day visit to Lebanon.
He was received at the airport by Lebanese President Michel Suleiman, Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, Prime Minister Najib Mikati, Lebanese Army Commander Lt. Gen Jean Qahwaji and Maronite Patriarch Beshara Boutros al-Rai, in addition to the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon, Ali Abed al-Karim Ali.
