The first batch of U.S. Army personnel have arrived to the Syrian province of Al-Hasakah, Sputnik News Agency reported on Wednesday, citing a Kurdish security source.

Sputnik News stated this U.S. Army convoy was comprised of 150 soldiers, including several officers. These soldiers reportedly arrived safely to the Kurdish controlled Ramilan Military Airport in east Al-Hasakah Another 100 U.S. Army personnel are expected to arrive to the neighbouring province of Al-Raqqa in the coming days. Earlier this month, U.S. President, Barack Obama, confirmed the plans to send 250 more troops to Syria, a substantial increase in the number of Americans working with local forces. “I’ve decided to increase US support for local forces fighting ISIL in Syria … I’ve approved the deployment of up to 250 US personnel in Syria, including special forces,” Obama said, announcing the decision after a meeting in Hanover with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. Previously, the U.S. only deployed 50 soldiers to northern Syria; however, the western power is attempting to take a more proactive role in the war against the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS).
