The Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) claimed its fighters have shot down a Syrian Air Force MIG-23 in the eastern province of Deir ez-Zor.
The group’s official social media account, Aamaq Agency, reported that the aircraft was downed near Thurdah Mountain. The pilot, identified as Mahmoud Jabr, was killed in the crash, it added.
Thurdah Mountain bears a strategic importance as it overlooks the city’s military airbase; the last stronghold for the government troops in the beleaguered eastern city.
ISIS’ repeated attempts to capture the Mountain has been, so far, repelled by the Army’s 104th Brigade of the Republican Guard.
