Yes he certainly is the perfect antithesis of Kamal Attaturk, a Turkish nationalist who wished to separate from Arabia as did figures like Hafez al-Assad. I’ve been writing about this for ages, Turkey’s intervention in Syria is unforgivable and an embarrassment to many Turkish people I’ve met in Beirut and in Gaziantep.
Turkey wasn’t a real Khalifa for ages before the Ottoman empire disbanded, it was more of a European power than anything else and I can only guess this is Erdogan’s real ambition though the position of Sultan probably appeals to his ego.
Yesterday there was a Turkish man on the ‘Today’ programme on R4, alleging that Erdogan engineered the coup in order to clamp down. Unfortunately I didn’t catch his name.
