During the battle for Sheikh Sa’eed hill in southern Aleppo earlier today, soldiers of the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) stumbled upon a handful of families caught in skirmishes between government troops and Islamist rebels fighting in the Sheikh Sa’eed district.

The civilians – who were visible shakened by the experience – have now been transferred to relatively safe urban areas in government-held western Aleppo. Pictures of the incident can be seen below:

Estimates on the number of civilians in besieged eastern Aleppo vary between 275,000 and 40,000; in any case, the SAA faces a considerable task in providing safe exists for non-combattants in rebel-held districts while simultaneously fighting hostile Islamist factions.
