DAMASCUS, SYRIA (11:30 A.M.) – A U.S. Congressional aide for Republican Doug Lamborn asked former White House Middle East coordinator, Phillip Gordon, why the government has not assassinated Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad.
“”What about assassinating Assad” the aide asked, according to a report from Foreign Policy.
Gordon responded that assassinating the Syrian President was in fact illegal and ineffective, the report added.
“That’s against the law and it wouldn’t make a difference anyway, because the Russians still have an interest in Syria and the Iranians still have an interest in Syria,” Gordon concluded.
The off-the-record briefing reportedly had as many as 75 congressional staffers on Thursday.
