A huge explosion rocked a checkpoint for the Kurdish People’s Protection Units (YPG) in the city of Afrin, northern Aleppo.

Local sources confirmed that up to 80 Kurdish fighters as well as civilians were killed and wounded in the explosion which is believed to be due to an airstrike conducted by unidentified warplane.

While YPG supporters accused Turkey of the bloody attack, some claimed that the airstrike was carried by either Syrian or Russian jet fighter.

The area targeted by the airstrike, located in Sherewa District, acts as a crossing point for civilians fleeing the battles currently fought between Syrian government forces and Islamist groups in the battleground city of Aleppo.

Afrin has recently come under rocket attacks and artillery bombardment fired by the Turkish military positioned along the borders with Syria.

Turkey is leading a coalition of Syrian rebels; currently engaged with heavy battles against the Islamic State jihadists along the borders.
