DAMASCUS, SYRIA (2:20 P.M.) – Egyptian fighter jets landed for the first time at the Hama Military Airport this week, the Lebanon-based As-Safir newspaper reported on Wednesday morning.
As-Safir claims that these Egyptian fighter jets will participate in the ongoing military operations against the Islamic State of Iraq and Al-Sham (ISIS), while also providing logistical support to the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAYF).
Al-Masdar contacted the Syrian Air Force to corroborate this report by As-Safir; however, no response has been received yet to verify the validity of this claim.
Last month, several Egyptian military advisors traveled from Cairo to the Port of Tartous in order to participate in a training session with their Russian counterparts at the T-4 Airport in east Homs.
Second comment, relevant to post this time, the British govt always banged on about Syria and its association with Russia but when I was there I saw more Russian people in Egypt, mainly tourists but recently a Syrian friend, with family is Egypt said that Russian people were buying up businesses there, not surprising they trust Russia more after the messes Britain has created throughout the last couple of centuries.
If they are going to Tartous they are definitely on the right side. Good news.

Please don’t put ISIS in brackets after al-Sham شمالي, which means the North in Arabic and is the common name for Syria throughout the Levant. It is so called because it was the most Northern part of the Arabian Caliphate in the time of the Prophet and after. It is also called Bilad-ashsham the country to the North definitely, and I believe has some roots in the way the sun sets between Mecca and Syria. The spoken dialect throughout the Levant is Shami الشامي. The title of my blog refers to the word for the sun الشمس in Arabic. Sorry the Arabic is so small but if you look closely the spelling is similar.
I know Syria’s Ramadan ends a day after that of Mecca, as I happened to be there in 2006 during the fast. This was in the autumn so maybe this is not the case when Ramadan is in the summer .
Nevertheless sham most popularly refers to the capital Damascus but does extend to the rest of the country. First thing people would ask you outside the capital is have you been or are you going to Sham.
The word is not associated in Syria with Islamic ”extremism” and is used by the Christian population too,
