Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov described ISIS are “barbarians” when hearing the news that the terrorist group has been destroying parts of the Roman Theater in the ancient city of Palmyra.
“I have seen reports the Roman Theater is blasted, I am not sure whether they are correct. What can I say? Barbarians are barbarians. This ideology and practice are absolutely unacceptable for the modern civilization,” he said on Friday.
Meanwhile, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov has said that the Syrian Army have not abandoned plans to liberate Palmyra from the terrorist group.
“As far as we know, the Syrian military is not abandoning plans to liberate this town and also other towns from terrorists,” Peskov said.
“The Russian military is continuing to assist Syrians in their struggle against terrorists,” he added.
He then continued to give his thoughts on the destruction of Palmyra.
“What is happening is a real tragedy from the viewpoint of the loss of the world cultural and historical heritage and the terrorists’ barbaric actions are continuing,” Peskov said.
