A new batch of Syrian troops graduated on Tuesday following an extensive training program led by Russian special forces in a mountainous region northeast of Damascus.
These newly recruited Syrian soldiers will join the Qalamoun Shield Forces and are expected to be deployed in eastern Homs in the near future to combat Islamic State militants at either Palmyra or the East Qalamoun region.
This newly formed Syrian Arab Army (SAA) contingent is specialised in storming operations and desert warfare. It is also trained specifically to fight ISIS.
Recently, Al-Masdar News revealed that the Russian Armed Forces had trained the SAA’s 5th Legion, including a unit known as ‘ISIS Hunters’.
Meanwhile, the SAA has reached the western outskirts of Palmyra while government forwards units are less than 3 kilometers from the Palmyra junction (Palmyra Triangle).
