According to London’s Times and an exhaustive report submitted by the British Home Office to the House of Commons, hundreds of Islamist-minded nationals of European countries fighting on the rebel sides in Syria and Mali may subsequently stage large-scale terror attacks in Europe. Spot checks carried out at London’s airports have already resulted in several arrests of potential ‘jihad tourists’.

Britain’s obstinate ‘topple Assad’ policy appears to be about to backfire. Indeed, the Syrian rebels and their European brethren hate the Western world much, much stronger that they hate the Damascus regime.

Dr Igor Korotchenko is Editor-in-Chief of the Natsionalnaya Oborona, or National Defence, journal:

“A large population of Muslims and an unparalleled concentration of targets make London a prime playground for Islamist terrorists. A spate of terror attacks in London could also trigger an avalanche of similar attacks elsewhere in Europe.”

Dr Azhdar Kurtov of the Russian Institute of Strategic Studies sounds less pessimistic:

“True, underground networks sometimes evade surveillance, which makes terror attacks possible. At the same time, the counter-terror defences of Western states are so reliable that a large-scale terror offensive in Western Europe is highly unlikely. Europe will continue to be used by Jihadists as a hideout, rather than a war theatre.”

Head of the Moscow-based Middle East Studies Institute Dr Yevgeny Satanovsky sees a major obstacle to eradicating European Jihadism, namely, post-colonial mindsets in today’s Europe:

“As a result, about a million immigrants from Muslim countries have settled in Europe. Hundreds of thousands of them are followers of radical political Islam. Dealing with this threat is unthinkable without returning to common sense and dropping the stupid concept of multiculturalism.”
